Alice in Memory-land
06/14/2026
Good Afternoon!
I made this comic about my Great-Grandmother last year. She quoted “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland” in the opening of her life history:
“I was born into this changing world. As I start to write my life story, I feel like the White Rabbit in Alice In Wonderland who asked, “Where shall I begin, please, your Majesty.?” “Begin at the beginning,” the King said gravely, “and go on ‘til you come to the end, then stop.” So — “In the beginning. . .” I was born in the northeast corner bedroom in the Libbey homestead..”
My Great-Grandmother died when I was 14.
I have other memories of her home and space, if not her. She had little tiny homemade baskets and carved wooden animals on the stairs going up to the (forbidden to children) second floor of her house. She had wooden tops that you’d pull a string to set flying. She had little woven cushions on each of her old wooden chairs.
Early last year my Grandma had me transcribe and digitize my Great-Grandmother’s life story. It was beautiful to come to know her through stories of her childhood and young adulthood. Favorite stories include her having some mineral deficiency and getting caught eating dirt as a young child (you must understand that she was a very proper lady by the time my parents and I knew her), hunting beehives with her dad and uncle for honey, and getting caught on the deck of a boat during a terrible storm.
Thanks for checking in today and see you next week!
